Just a little update that came to my mind. I wrote about a year ago about
my frustration with our new blood glucose protocol initiated by a neonatologist
who blamed breastffeding/hypoglycemia on his son's developmental problems.
Despite our concerns about the accuracy of our blood glucose machines on infants
the policy change was instituted and we ended up transferring a ridiculous
number of babies needlessly to intensive care, the majority of them being
asymptomatic. He also had done away with verifying low machine numbers with serum
levels.
We've had our new machines now for about 6 months and hardly ever transfer
a baby for hypoglycemia to intensive care!! Of course we have never gotten
him to admit he was wrong and that we should have waited for the new machines.
And they wonder why we get so frustrated. Sherry Weersing RNC
