While the act of separation is nothing new, I have to wonder if one of the
reasons back then was to prevent too much attachment in the event of infant
death.  Nursing bonds you to the baby, and given the high rates of infant
mortality, perhaps separation was a psychological protection.

Have those of you who worked in underdeveloped nations noticed this kind of
logic among the ladies?
