I don't have any research to share, but I did care for one baby in the
hospital that had chylothorax and was breastfed. Apparently the fat in the
breastmilk, or any other food, makes the fluid collection worse. So what the mother
had to do in that case, was to centrifuge pumped milk and remove the cream from
it. They then added a little portagen powder (if I'm not mistaken) to make
up for the calories removed with the fat. If we ran out of breastmilk at the
hospital we gave portagen. This is a very difficult problem to treat, from my
limited experience caring for patient with chylothorax. I saw several others
from babies to teens, but that was the only one that was breastfed.

Hello Friends,
I was contacted by a mother (a friend) who's baby was born at 32 weeks, c-
section, with kylothorax, which I know very little about. I put her in touch
with the IBCLC RN at the hospital but I know that she will turn to me for
support, advice etc over the next few months. I found nothing in English on google or
in the lactnet archives. Could someone please fill me in on this condition
or send me somewhere on the web.
Thank you so much in advance,
Chayn Nancy Fogelman IBCLC Israel
