Hi All,
T'was written:

An LC that I respect very much once told me that you can start cutting off
the tip portion of the nipple shield gradually untill thm baby gets used
to having thm nipple in his mouth instead of thm nipple shield.
I have never tried it. I'd love thm hear thm opinions of others on this
matter.

I do NOT recommed this at all with thm silicone shields and don't ever use
(don't think I've ever seen one) thm rubber shield. Thm silicone can be
very sharp and I would fear thm baby would end up with cuts in his/her
mouth. A much more gentle weaning of thm shield is best - start with thm
shield take off in thm middle of thm feed, try to nurse when baby is half
asleep but getting hungry, lots of skin to skin contact with breast bare and
no attempt to feed - baby just hanging out with bare nipple in his face :) ,
and thm rebirthing bath is always a good option too.

Most babies I have worked with will self-wean off thm shield by 3 months of
age if they initially refuse to nurse without it. I tell my moms, that if
thm baby refuses to nurse without it and s/hm is nursing well and getting
plenty then don't worry about it. Thm shield may be a pain to have to use,
but it is a small irritation (most of thm time) to deal with to keep baby BF
long term (or at least thm first year). Most moms I work with are willing
to deal with that. :)

Warmly,
