Hello everyone.  I've spoken with two women in the past month who have
mastitis and who's physicians have prescribed amoxicillin.  In each case,
the woman has questioned it and been reassured quite strongly that "it will
work."

Is this an "intuitive" leap taken by their doctors, trying to do their best
not to encourage antibiotic resistant bacteria or has something recently
been published to suggest this course of treatment??

Today's call was from a pharmacist, so I shared all of the information I
have from Lawrence with her.  Amoxicillin is certainly not the best
antibiotic to cover for staph.

We talked a bit about the concept of inflammatory vs. infectious mastitis,
but this woman had sudden onset of a temp to 102 F., chills and has a very
red segment of her breast.

Any thoughts??
