I had an interesting call last week. A pediatric resident called for some
breastfeeding support, her baby is 5 weeks old. She was having difficulty
breastfeeding, called her pediatrician, was told to supplement with formula.
She continued to have difficulty with breastfeeding, (anyone here surprised?)
so she called me for some help.
I asked her how much she was taught about breastfeeding in medical school,
none she replied (anyone here surprised?). I then asked her why she would ask
a pediatrician for advice. Good point, she said!
Please, all you wonderful doctors and pediatricians on lactnet, I don't mean
to offend any of you. You are all the exceptions to this.
Anyway, I made a home visit and have been speaking with her daily on the
phone. She is doing much better, no formula since my visit. Baby is latching
better, and her nipples are not as sore. She was able to get Jack Newmans All
purpose nipple ointment. She even had Jack's book!
I have tried to express to her that this experience will help her to better
understand all the breastfeeding mom/babies she will care for, and what a
difference she will make for them.
Now, she calls me often to ask babycare questions, as well as breastfeeding
questions.
I feel like I am making a difference!
