Actually lots of pediatricians pierce ears. It's always been on the superbill
I get at the pedis office. They don't pierce as many ears as do Piercing
Pagoda or Claire's*, but they do pierce. Ear piercing isn't considered a
totally benign, no risk procedure. Lots of states (maybe all, I'm not sure)
require parental permission if the piercee is under 18. I had to sign
permission forms when my girls had their ears pierced as young teens.

Pete in the expression "for Pete's sake" refers to Saint Peter, the chief
Apostle and early head of the Christian Church. I think the use of Pete
instead of G-d softens the swear a little as does the use of gosh.
