I've been following this discussion with interest.  There is one other
thought that came to mind (probably a "zebra", but might be worth
considering).  I remember  someone-I think it was Chele
Marmet-mentioning that babies with allergies have an itchy palate and
that may be one reason for a baby keeping the tongue "glued" to the roof
of the mouth.  Might the same thing apply to this 5 month old?  Is there
a possibility that the firmer finger is soothing an itchy palate better
than the softer nipple/areola?  If using a toy to "keep the hand busy"
doesn't work, this might be something to consider.
