I know most of you do not live in California, but many of you know someone
who does live here. Please read (and share with others) if you do:

September 1, 2009

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the California WIC Association and the California Breastfeeding
Coalition we are writing to announce the application process for membership
on the California Breastfeeding Roundtable (CBR). This advisory group will
make policy and strategy recommendations to both the public and private
sectors regarding breastfeeding and early feeding.

Background:
You may be familiar with a former related committee, started in 1994, the
Breastfeeding Promotion Advisory Committee (BPAC). In July 2007 when the
California Departments of Public Health and Health Care Services were
created from the Department of Health Services, the authority for the
committee ended with the end of the Department of Health Services. The
California Breastfeeding Roundtable is sponsored by four divisions in the
California Department of Public Health: Women's Infants and Children (WIC),
Maternal Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH), Physical Activity and Nutrition
(PAN), and Genetic Disease Screening.

Much of the groundwork for the mission of the CBR is included in
recommendations made by the BPAC in the recently released report
Breastfeeding: Investing in California's Future ( 2007), [can easily be
linked from http://cdph.ca.gov/bresatfeeding] The work ahead would focus on
the specific strategies laid out in the report and efforts needed to engage
stakeholders in implementing strategies for improved breastfeeding for
California families.

Qualifications and Provisions:
Roundtable members must have current or unique knowledge and experience in
issues that can be applied to the support and promotion of breastfeeding.

The California Breastfeeding Roundtable will be compromised of 20-25
individuals representing diverse organizations, disciplines and ethnicities.
Appointment will be by an application process with initial staggered term
limits of two or three years to allow for smooth membership rotation.
Subcommittee work will be required on an as needed basis and that work will
occur by email, phone and web forums. Members are requested to also be on
the California Breastfeeding Coalition (a coalition of local breastfeeding
coalitions http://www.californiabreastfeeding.org/)and their local
breastfeeding coalition
(http://www.cdph.ca.gov/services/Documents/MO-BFP-RC-Map.htm), if one exists
in their community. Meetings will be held twice a year in Sacramento and/or
Southern California. Travel costs may NOT be included and could include
hotel, mileage or airfare, depending on funding. Limited scholarships will
be available.

The application can be downloaded from:
