All of this is avoidable! More than 95% of babies (in the first 4 months)
can be calmed within minutes (usually seconds) by using the 5 S's and turning on
their calming reflex. It is a simple skill that ALL new parents should be
taught and is supported by leaders of La Leche, Lamaze, AAP, AAFP, DONA, and
even the former Surgeon General.
It also prevents unnecessary bottle-feeding in breastfed newborns:
I show Dr. Karp's video in my Childbirth classes & have a handout with a
summary of the 5 S's & his web site address. (My daughter & I used this for her
2nd baby, who was colicky & irritable, with great success. I know personally how
well it works.) I also have couples from my class who have used this
technique on baby's second night. They have reported that baby fed & fed & fed & then
didn't want to feed any more but was still fussy. They instituted the 5 S's &
everyone was happy & baby did NOT get any bottles. I have occasionally used
this for a mom who says baby is still hungry after cluster nursing & have shown
her that a bottle is not necessary.
