The lactoferrin industry that makes its lactoferrin through cell or yeast
culture (like Agennix) is in the process of seeking GRAS status for this kind of
lactoferrin (milk lactoferrin made by animal transgenics has GRAS status).
Here is a study they will probably use to support the need for this product
added to infant formulas and Human Milk Fortifers (HMF). The name of the study is
"Lactoferrin in the Preterm Infants' Diet Attenuates Iron-Induced Oxidation
Products," by researchers Raghuveer et al. It was in the journal, Pediatrics
Research in 2002. "In summary, medicinal iron supplements added to formula and
HMF containing iron added to human milk increased free radical generation and
lipid peroxidation."

The answer to the problem of iron damage to preterm infants (and term
infants) by formulas and fortifiers is to add a genetically engineered component of
human milk. While this study maybe used as supportive evidence for adding
recombinant human lactoferrin, many will not read the study and notice the
acknowledgements. The study was supported by the US government. Agennix
generously provided the recombinant human lactoferrin. The US government is supporting
research to create better infant formulas and fortifiers. This is
acknowledgement that formulas and fortiers are damaging babies. And the answer is to
change the formulation not to encourage breastfeeding. Change the formulation
with another experimental component and hope that you don't damage more babies.
Hurrah for biotechnology and US government support of breastfeeding.

"Supported by NIH HL46925 (J.A.W.), NIH CA66081 (G.R.B.), and NIH CA81090
(G.R.B.). The authors thank Agennix for the gift of recombinant human Lf (apo and
holo), mothers who generously donated breast milk for this study, and Tracy
L. Tud, R.N., who helped collect the human milk samples. We also thank Bradley
E. Britigan, M.D., for his encouragement and guidance during the study and
Ekhard E. Ziegler, M.D., and Larry W. Oberley, Ph.D., for stimulating
discussions."
