The 5% number comes from a study done by Marianne Neifert, MD among her
patients who were having trouble with breastfeeding. That was the number
IN HER PRACTICE who could not make sufficient milk for biological
reasons. She also found that having any type of breast surgery tripled
the risk of insufficient milk, and is responsible for our knowlege that
3-5 or more stools per day in the early weeks means sufficient milk
intake by a bf infant.
