I have found the responses to my post about nipple soreness in the early weeks very interesting.

I haven't seen any differentiation between soreness during nursing and between nursings.  In my own case, the soreness, for the most part, was between nursing. I remember saying with my first baby, that the only time it didn't hurt, was when I was nursing.

With my 3rd and 4th babies I had a Raynaud's response (which with the 3rd was possibly related to thrush and with my 4th I think was caused by somewhat of a clenching response on my son's part), but with my first two babies I still was sore for about the first month and I didn't have any of these issues.

What are the causes and solutions to this type of soreness and how common is it?  My feeling is that considering how much a newborn nurses, that that is a lot of friction on an area that is not used to it and it's bound to feel sensitive.
