Dear Friends:
    In the States, parents are made to feel bad if they don't use car seats,
or smoke during pregnancy, or don't immunize. The public education campaigns
about these issues are scary.........it seems to be effective. Recent estimates
are that New York City has 100,000 less smokers, partly from educational
campaigns and partly from very high taxes on tobacco.
    We aren't choosing a woman's feelings by telling her the truth about
infant feeding. Not breastfeeding increases the risk of postneonatal death, just
as not using a car seat or using tobacco in the home increases the risk of
infant death. People need to know this, and know it before the choice is made.
    No way to soften these facts.
