Hi all,

A Mum in our LLL group has a baby who now, after several months, can finally
breathe. She has had severe allergies all this time and was unable to nurse
for more than a suck or two at a time. Now they have finally isolated the
things that interfered with her breathing (causing severe nasal congestion)
and she can breathe normally through her nose. So that is wonderful news.

But this little girl has always nursed in a two-gulp, break to breathe, on
and off pattern and now, even though she could nurse for a more extended amount
of time, she thinks this is normal and sticks with it. Latching and
relatching several times in a feeding is getting tiresome and takes longer than it
should. She's also on the smaller size and could benefit from some longer
sessions and probably transferring more milk or increasing her mother's supply.

So we were trying to think of ways to retrain the baby (about 9 months old
now) to nurse in a more suck-swallow pattern without having to come off to
breathe every few seconds. Any ideas? This mother is doing great, nursing
longer than she ever has before, and we would love to be able to brainstorm and
figure out how we might her them make this work.
