I never thought bacterial contamination was the primary reason for
discarding any milk left in a bottle that's been in baby's mouth.
The reason I have heard for recommending that any bottled milk
whether it's EBM or AIM needs to be tossed after an hour is that
there is the potential for some of baby's digestive enzymes to get
from baby's mouth into the milk through the nipple holes.
Therefore, some digestion of the milk could begin. (That is one
advantage of a Haberman feeder-only what is in the "teat" portion
has this potential, the milk remaining in the bottle portion will
not have come in contact with digestive enzymes, therefore could be
safely saved for the nest feeding.-Note, I have no interest in the
company that makes the Habermans.)
Has anyone else heard this concern? Is it a big enough concern to
warrant the recommendation of discarding any EBM left in a bottle
after an hour?
Winnie
