Aren't the pump kits a chargeable item? If not they should be. Document every
one of these situations and attempt to reason with the boss. This is a
patient satisfaction issue, health care issue and moms should be aware of
your "change" in policy. I suspect it's a host of the other issues you
mentioned as well....patients who get 2 binders, many pairs of panties, extra
pads, diapers etc. In these days of capitation, the patient who uses less
makes more for the unit. But these are serious ommissions to the standard of
care of a pre-term baby whose mother desires to provide breastmilk. Can you
get risk management involved? Or does she want to wait until a very upset mom
makes a lot of noise? wink wink. Suggest they (moms) ask for the charge nurse
to explain why they can't have a pump kit, or leave a voice mail for the
director (give her name and tell them to call the hospital and ask for her.)
Good Luck
