Metformin has been around for quite a while. Troglitazone was recently
pulled from the market for a similar concern, but metformin has a good
safety profile when used judiciously. The key is to screen both mother and
baby for good hepatic and renal function, and to keep in mind that the
amount baby actually absorbs will be much less than what mom got. At the
very least, monitoring of the infant should address such a concern. Tom
currently rates the drug L3.
