Dear Friends:
    The research on this topic is giving us new clues.  Babies do die of SIDS
in bed with their mothers; the incidence is much  lower.

    The research is telling us that adult beds can be  dangerous places for
babies. Babies can become trapped or overheated because the  classic adult bed
in the US is either a soft surface (like a water bed) or  contains lots of
pillows and blankets or other children or pets or stuffed  animals. Or the adult
can be a smoker, or using substances like drugs or  alcohol that changes
inherent sensitivity.

    In many parts of the world, people sleep on mats on  the ground; this is
safe. A baby can not be trapped or overheated in such a  setting.
    So our goal is now to make the adult bed safe for a  baby, just as we
make cars safe for babies.
