Hi all, I'm reading a lot about breech delivery's lately...Am feeling we are going
a bit off topic. There are lots of valid points being made regarding breech
birth. However, most of us posting are not OB's or birth attendants... I don't
think I have read any OB's or CNM add to this discussion. I have seen good
breech delivery's good outcomes and bad breech delivery's with bad
outcomes. And when parents have bad outcomes, no matter how bad they
wanted a "natural" childbirth they tend to blame someone. Usually the MD.
who assissted the family to help carry out the their dream of a "natural" birth.
If we weren't such a "suit" happy society maybe OB's would be more willing to
deliver breech births. And I agree with a previous poster..A breech delivery
with a 4 th baby is a MUCH different story than a primip who's pelvis has not
had a trial of labor. Some woman no fault of their own, are born with a more
android shaped pelvis. Which may or may not be adequate for such a birth.
There was a time when women did die in childbirth..Thank God those stats are
low now. I was working Labor when a mom came in in good hard labor, baby
was breech and she was ready to push. 1st time mommy, it was only then
that the discovery was made that baby was frank breech. As sometimes
happens with breech deliveries, the uterus thinks the largest part has come
thru first (head down) and begins to close around the infants neck. Despite
execellent care and quick thinking, trying different positions, it was 45 min
before the head delivered and I am sorry to say it was not a good outcome. I
realize bad things happen with every sort of delivery, but breech deliveries in
my opinion are inherently known to have more things go wrong due to the
nature of the anatomy and physiology of Labor and birth, cord accidents are
far more common in breech births, especiallly a footling breech where the cord
can fall thru the cevix with the foot. A cord prolapse is a obsterical
emergency. Why would someone risk their own experience for a water birth or
even a unassisted home birth with a known breech presentation? For the
babies experience, or for the family's. The safety of the baby and mommy
would far outweigh my own desire for the sake of "experience". I'm sure there
would be a mourning for the natural birth, but having a safe journey outweighs
it for me.
I know my views are not shared by all. And I may be the epitomy of the
medical model, but I have seen the parents who wanted and desired a normal
birth at the sake of safety and seen their dreams crushed and hearts broken.
Just the same way many parents feel that having a hospital birth or unplanned
c/s destroyed the fullfilment of natural childbirth. In my experience the former
happens more often than the latter, and with the latter dreams are dashed,
but hearts are not forever broken. These topics are so deeply emotional.
Back to breastfeeding please.....Off topic subjects somehow seem to push us
farther apart rather than joining in one unison with the protection, promotion
and loving relationship breastfeeding enjoys. Something we can all rejoice in.

Warmest Regards,
robin
