I just attended a very interesting (research based pilot study)
presentation at ILCA by Cynthia Sandburg about Cold Therapy for Breast
Engorgement. It is certainly well worth the cost of the tape if anyone
wants to hear it.

In a nutshell (who, me? Have I ever put anything in a nutshell!?) she
said that her literature search did not reveal any research based
evidence of the usefulness of either heat or cold in treating
engorgement.

She overcame the commonly quoted concern about cold inhibiting the MER by
testweighing babies after feedings following cold therapy and comparing
the testweighing of the same babies after previous, non-cold therapy
feedings. Comparable intakes.

She drew from the recent practices of physical therapy, orthopedics and
breast ca surgery in the use of cold to reduce tissue swelling. Not only
does it reduce pain but the effects last for at least 90 minutes, even
though the coldpacks are not to be left in place longer than 20-30
minutes.

She made a believer of me!

K. Jean Cotterman RNC, IBCLC, who garnered memories among the mammaries
discussions in DC. My yellow rose, awarded to those dozens of us
certified in the first exam, still certified, and in attendance at ILCA,
was gently handcarried on the plane and is still standing proudly in its
vase, soon to be pressed into my scrapbook along with the yellow IBCLC
ribbon. What a nice gesture, and how nice the standing ovation was!
