Heres the link to the study on the BMJ site:

Its excellent research - I agree- and its a well
designed study with a huge sampling- over 5000 moms
and babies- and one that I hope all you breastfeeding
experts/advocates will take time to read and learn
about. We all know that natural childbirth is a great
start for a little breastfeeder, those unmedicated
babies are so alert and eager to feed and those
unmedicated nipples are so much easier to grab onto!!
And while natural childbirth is possible in a
hospital, it is infinitely more probable in a
homebirth setting.
And now we have further research that demonstrates
homebirth with a trained attendant is just as safe for
babies- and even safer for mommies(less medical
interventions)

Winnie- hopefully most people realize that in the US
around 7-8 babies die out of a thousand every year in
hospital births, despite being surrounded with medical
technology!

Certainly a case could be argued that more mother's
die every year as a result of delivering IN a
hospital(from complications from unnecessary medical
interventions)

This study demonstrates that normal healthy
pregnancies can result in comparable infant mortality
rates whether they plan to birth at home or hospital.
Its really a wonderful breakthrough study
demonstrating the comparable safety of homebirth vs
hospital with homebirth offering similar safe outcomes
with LESS medical interventions.

Do people really believe that having their baby in a
hospital guarantees it won't die??

"Great article, but I can hear some say, in response
to table regarding
the very few instances of neonatal death, "Even one
death is too many!"
I wish the article would have indicated more clearly
the poor outcomes
with comparable moms who chose delivery in hospital.
Bad outcomes in
the hospital are too often chalked up to "bad luck of
the draw" whole a
bad outcome at home is blamed on the delivery
location!

Winnie
Wishing she had known as much about home birth when I
had my babies."
