Hi all,
Had an interesting call from a mom yesterday who is nursing a 1 year old
baby. The baby has weighed 22 lbs since 9 mo of age. The physicians are
concerned about the lack of weight gain in the last 3 months. Mom thinks that
if she stops BFing the baby will eat (I strongly discouraged this option--if
the kid isn't eating then at least there's value in the breastmilk. Also it
reminded me too much of the starve her into submission route)
No illness. She nurses 3 times a day, drinks 6-8 oz of juice and nibbles on
table foods (tortillas and beans, mangos) Mom has already seen a dietician in
my office who recommended giving the baby more control over food choices--
leave food where she can reach it, let the baby feed herself. So, I have a
funny feeling that there's an underlying control issue here with the parents.
Any suggestions/ ideas you might have for this mom would be helpful
