This system (free yellow and red nipples) is ever so common in the US! The
best way to end it, I think, is to get an OT/PT or speech therapist who
knows the literature on infant suck. They can give many reasons why these
nipples are not physiologically conducive to normal development (see recent
article in Neonatal Network by Shaker, C. (1999) Vol. 18, No.3. pp 1515-22)
for starters.

This article highlights the history of rubber nipples and esp. the thinking
that faster flow is better for preemie babies. That has been ABSOLUTELY
DISPROVEN by Meier and her colleagues.

My experience is that hospitals will change under pressure that is research
based and clinically proven...not so for that which is ethically based and
WHO promoted.

Good Luck!

I believe that our hospital (which is 10 steps away from becoming
baby-friendly ! sob!) uses freebie nipples supplied for free from formula
companies to attach to the free bottles of free formula. There are free
yellow ones, and free red premie style ones!! (anyone see a theme here?)
