An IBCLC and a speech therapist (Bovey and Noble) working together in
Australia spoke about this at the ABA conference last year. They suggest
the standard shaped teat, as long as possible, and always in latex, not
silicone, to enhance oral-sensory feedback. They had worked together
with a man who designs latex teats for the local ZOO for hand rearing
various animals! They said he knew more about optimal teat design that
any person they had ever met! All teats are too short, they said, but
the best one available there was the Cannon Babysafe, regular shape.
They suggested eliciting the gape and having the bottle angled so the
base of the teat (near the ring) was as close to the baby's chin as
possible, or just touching, much like the asymmetrical attachment at the
breast.
