Susan, many good points! I totally agree that US isn't the model we need to
emulate when it comes to BF :-)

I think the greater percentage of Lactnetters are outside the hospital and
not RNs. Guess we need a poll, wouldn't the demographics of this list make
fascinating research? The HBLC list is for hospital based LCs and probably
has many more RNs on it.

I'm an office based pediatric nurse practitioner (advanced practice RN). I
would want to get a report on babies having significant problems with
breastfeeding, especially in the early days. You wouldn't believe how many
kids I send to specialists and only ever get the parents version of what the
specialist said - follow-up,even if brief, from the consultant is a very
necessary part of my on-going education in other areas of medicine. I think
the same would imply for BF. It doesn't have to be pages long. Just a
short fill in the blanks - saw baby x for xyz, suggested abc to mom. If it
is a mommy (mothering problem) not a BF problem then I wouldn't bother to
let HCP (health care provider) know. But if I had major concerns about the
mothering I would contact HCP immediately (and have done so- sometimes we
are the first to see major impending problems with post partum depression.)

Major concerns about baby's or mom's health require a conversation asap wih
HCP.

Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
