I was a hospital based LC until I had my daughter 3 mos
ago. I don't know of a policy re: co-sleeping.
Personally, my husband stayed overnight with us (on a
glorified cot). The baby slept with either one of us
all night, not in the plastic bucket provided and we all
slept better. I will say that my nurses asked me
repeatedly if I wanted them to put the baby in
the "crib" or to bring the baby to the nursery so we
could get more sleep. I declined the "generous " offers
and explained that we would sleep better with the baby.
I prepared myself to ask them to tuck us in with a sheet
around the baby and parent she was sleeping with if it
was an issue for them.
Re: uniforms- my former assistant nurse manager wears a
pacifier pin and former nurse manager wears the same as
well as a bottle pin. Needless to say, there isn't a
commitment to BF. They recently laid off 2 IBCLC's who
were not nurses while I was on medical leave in
pregnancy. I am a RN, so was not laid off. That left
NO IBCLC's. So, what they did next was to send 5 nurses
to a lactation counselor program. They now have ads in
the newspaper that boast that all breastfeeding
specialists and consultants (there aren't any) working
there are RN's. By boasting the RN's, they left out 2
fantastic LPN's that would have been great additions to
a lactation team. It's all politics.
I asked for an extension of my leave and it was denied,
so I resigned. I'm thinking about private practice. If
anyone has ideas to get me started, I'd appreciate
them.
