I have been lurking for quite some time and have gained so much from this
site. I am a hospital based LC and need your asiistance with a mom I am
working with. She has given me permisssion to post. Her baby is 5 months
old and she is in the middle of a custody case. The father of the baby did
not want to have anything to do with her before the baby was born but now
wants to be very involved. ( Good for him) The main problem is that he
does not value breastfeeding nor does his mother thinks breastfeeding is
important. The mom has allowed the father to take the baby for short visits
with some of her EBM. She has been concerned that they would give the baby
ABM. She called me upset because the baby's stools had changed and baby
was very unhappy and became constipated. They admitted they had given the
baby formula. Mom had struggled with her supply and I instructed her to
buy an effectvie breastpump- she purchased a PIS also purchased
galatogoes. Both helped but she still is under a great deal of stress with
this situation. Anyway the father and family took her to court to get
visitation for 24 hours on which includes ABM and 24 hours with mom with
breastfeeding. I pulled up the info from Liz Baldwin and shared with her
lawyer. I was called as an expert witness and a pediatrician was called
for them although he said he wouldn't recommend the baby go back and
forth. The judge ruled yesterday that the father can have the baby for 24
hour visits. She stated she felt that the mother was too attached to her
baby and it was important for the baby to bond with the father. She also
stated that the baby may have a few rough days but will get through it.( I
was not in the courtroom this is what was relayed to me by the mother) Of
course mother is devastated and worries about what this will do to the
baby's system because of previous exposure. I have contacted Liz Baldwin's
office and waiting to hear back. I need some guidance, but just hoping
with all of the wisdom here on Lactnet there may be something I can do.
The family has turned to me for help. Now I turn to you. Thanks in advance
and thank you for this site.
