Hello Nettters,

Did anyone read the article from BIRTH, Vol. 24, #2, June 1997:
Breastfeeding and the Use of Pacifiers, by Lennart Righard, MD and Margaret
Alade, RN, BSC, MS?? I just received my journal in the mail. Results were
: "The breastfeeding rate at 4 months was 91% in the nonpacifier group and
44% in the pacifier group (p=0.03). An incorrect superficial nipple-sucking
technique at the breast from the start combined with pacifier use resulted
in early weaning in most cases. CONCLUSION: To promote successful
breastfeeding and to reduce nursing problems, an incorrect sucking technique
should be prevented or corrected, and the use of pacifiers should be avoided
or restricted." Amen. Well stated. But then at the end of the journal
included in the "letters" was a rebuttal from 2 MDs in Obstetrical
Anaesthesia stating "Currently, insufficient evidence exists to condemn the
use of epidural fentanyl on this basis........" relating back to Marsha
Walkers article "Epidurals and Breastfeeding", which talked about epidural
labor analgesia and its detrimental effects on breastfeeding. Back to the
drawing board. Have a good weekend all you lactnuts.
From Mrs. Webster's "Guide to Business". Day Off- "Time during which you
worry non-stop about the work piling up at the office instead of relaxing."
