I had a mom in the office today who's been pumping for four months; this
baby (her second child) was premie, stayed in the hospital for one
month, and mom has been pumping all along. She says that her husband is
very involved when she pumps, it's something they do together and helps
them share. They would feed the baby pumped foremilk at some feedings,
and when they wanted her to sleep longer they would feed her pumped
hindmilk! When she told me this, I suggested that they blend the milks,
although they had beendoing this before consulting with me and it seemed
to work for them! The baby looks beautifully filled out, and the mom was
happy to use the electric pump in the office today, said it was much
faster than the small electric pump she purchased at the drug store. She
also said that the hospital's electric pump (different company, very
similar model) had much stronger suction. I wonder if the pump kit
design has anything to do with it, since I thought the two pumps used
exactly the same piston mechanism...
BTW, the baby has received nothing but mother's milk, the mom told the
NICU staff that if they gave the baby anything else she would SUE! The
freezer was always full of her milk, and she encouraged other premie
moms to breastfeed....
I can add another 8 ounces to our total pumped breastmilk at WIC!
