I didn't receive any explanation of the mechanism for an elevated bilirubin
in a newborn because of medications mother took during pregnancy. I did
ask one of the Family Nurse Practitioners at work today what she thought.
Her explanation is that the baby's liver is overwhelmed with trying to
process the drug and all of the dead red blood cells and on top of that it
doesn't work efficiently anyway in a newborn. I guess I'll have to live
with that explanation. Thanks to all who did respond. Camille Foretich
