Pam, I love your post and am sooooo with you!  Honesty is the best policy....why do we feel that sheltering women from the truth is OK?  "Oh best, not to hurt their feelings"  Please, we need to grow up and stop being "enablers" 
Treating parents like the very children they have just delivered is totally unnecessary and inappropriate!  You treat them like babies and they will act like babies.  Treat them like intelligent/responsible adults and they will step up and act that way....that's what I do and have done over the last 20 yrs...shoot straight from the hip...no holes barred (delivered in a funny and sincere way).  I am aware of my reputation but if honesty isn't what they want then don't come to me which is fine.  At least,  I am honest with them and myself.
