My hospital is initiating a new protocol to give sugar water during
> circumcisions to control pain.

Becky, just thinking more on this:

the Australian Breastfeeding Association has a great article (Hot Topic)
written by Kathryn Wood (March 12 2003)
see
http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/lrc/publications.html
although the topic is not listed on the website as it is so new, you can
order it at a cost. Or get you hospital library to order it so they cover
the costs?

one reference that may interest you is
Bucher HU, Baumgartner R, Bucher N, Seiler M, Fauchere J 2000, Artificial
sweetener reduces nociceptive reaction in newborns. Early Hum Dev 59(1):
51-60

also the WHO 'ten steps'-this is a violation of Step 6 (...no food or drink
unless medically indicated...)
and
Step 9 (..no artificial teats or pacifiers...)
see
http://www.who.int/child-adolescent-health/New_Publications/NUTRITION/WHO_CHD_98.9.pdf

also search the archives for circumcision, as this has been discussed
before.
Best of luck
Karen Clements
