Hi Judy,

I think this statement: "When the child can ask for it, it's probably time 
to move on-stop breastfeeding" is generally not meant in a literal sense by 
the people stating it. I think it is usually a "humorous" attempt made by a 
person who is uncomfortable with the thought/sight of a baby older than a 
newborn who is breastfeeding.  The person has no real understanding of 
breastfeeding or knowledge of how weaning occurs and deals with this 
ignorance by tossing out a light-hearted comment in hopes of covering their 
discomfort with the whole subject.
