Dear Becky,

In addition to time with baby, I would add hand expression and
nipple stimulation to each pumping session, perhaps 5 minutes of
hand expression and ten minutes of double pumping. This may be
especially helpful if mom is not getting much time with baby at
breast. Agree that she should also up the total pumping sessions
to at least 8/day.

You don't say how much milk this mom is making. Might be better
at this point to concentrate on keeping some degree of milk
production going and not fixate on the amount. Reassure mom
that milk production should climb when baby actually begins to go
to breast on a regular basis. Kangarooing is a great idea, even if
baby is not suckling much yet.

Accentuate the positive. Each drop of milk is precious and a
miraculous gift that she is providing to her child.

Merry Christmas to all!

Warmly,
