Hello today is an ideal day in SFl. Going up to 74...should have been on
way to NY but spouse needs cardiac cath on Monday, with bad weather coming up
there glad we are here....no shoveling.
This note is in response to Susan Burger who said that IBCLC or Lactation
Consultants are viewed like personal trainers....too true. We have one daughter
who is pregnant and her office coworkers are telling her you need to register
for Childbirth Classes...her response, "my mom teaches remember?", then it
was well you need to get a Lactation Consultant....response: "my mom is a
lactation consultant". Oh and you need a doula...response: "hey do any of you
remember my mom is an LDRP nurse!!!".These helpful reminders came from her boss who
was induced, had her epidural and breastfeed less than a month and still
bottle feeds the 4 year old but trainers and LCs are like the nanny a status
symbol.
Every day we encounter women upon admission who start to request the
Lacatation Consultant even before putting the baby on the breast. It's status, just
like our big suites. And most will cave in the first night and request a
bottle. Culturally Miami is a breastfeeding desert. They say " I am going to try",
" I will do both". We are trying to make inroads but I really feel that we
need to promote it from the minute they enter the doctor's office
.....Empowering them to think they can and will succeed and they have milk. I had a lady
two days ago who told me she had "no milk"
baby sucking away and moved its head and I had to duck for the spray that
came out. I told her that WAS milk, she told me "no, it was water." Fortunately
the baby had more sense than its mother and grandmother and refused the
bottle and only wanted Mom. She was sad the baby had rejected the bottle, (it was
offered before I came to the room). By the end of the 12 hour shift she had
gotten the message loud and clear....."I only want Mommy!" The fact that her
nurse for the day was an LC was the impressive part to her. "I have the
Lactation Consutant for my nurse today."
So did 4 other dyads.
Well stay warm. Off to shop for the pregnant one's birthday gift...pjs, and
breastfeeding bra.
Lovingly,
Leanne Jewell, RNC, LCCE, FACCE, IBCLC
