You can't know how happy I am to finally be here, Rather computer
iliterate, but learning, Hopefully
now I am appropriately set up to send/and receive messages. My
fingers are crossed. This is the
senerio about which I am concerned. Hopefully a GI Dr. Wonderful
will respond and give me the
facts I need to assist this mother. Infant's DOB: 8/31/95, 5.10
birth weight, gestation 33 weeks.,
admitted to NICU as mother had a fever in L & D (following Epidural
of Nubain). Workup revealed
no growth but infant was treated with antibiotic therapy , as was
mother. Infant was fed Allumentum
in NICU and she tolerated it. When mother began to introduce EBM,
infant developed "diarrhea",
further described by mother as "urine coming out of the anus". The
infant's abdomen became
distended 3 X it's normal size, They took her to the ER, x-rays were
obtained and reported to the
mother as flatus blowing up this infants gut. She was placed on
Enfamil with low iron, and there
was blood in the stool. The NICU states a test was performed on her
stool which revealed sugar
(duh) in the stool. Therefore a conclusion was drawn that the infant
is lactose intolerant and she
is placed on a hypoallergenic formula-mom is pumping and waiting for
me to refer her. She was
supposed to see a GI specialist today. I'm confused. I am not aware
of a stool test that will prove
an infant to be lactose intolerant. NICU MD reported to this mom
that her infant was not digesting
"sugar" in EBM. Infant behaves like she is in extreme pain when fed
breastmilk, either expressed
or fed at breast. So Mom put her back on formula and is reaching out
in all directions for assistance.
Hope there is an informed Lactneter out there who can help me asap.
