Hi Lisa,
At our hospital with a level 1 and 2 nursery, we test only high risk or
symptomatic infants. High risk would be premature, SGA, LGA, IDM, and of
course sick infants.

I believe there should be a policy on glucose testing separate from a policy
on feeding, which would address babies that don't eat, whether breast or
bottle. Breast babies that are otherwise well, but aren't feeding, could be
kept STS and offered colostrum on a spoon at intervals. Babies that don't
eat, in my opinion, need further evaluation.

The glucose testing policy would kick in if an infant was symptomatic of
hypoglycemia.

Hope this helps,
Laurie Wheeler, RN, MN, IBCLC

New Albany MS
