I, too, have seen babies who object to even being put to the breast. In
fact, I've had a rash of them here, though it seems to be calming now. I
have theorized that many or most of these babies, who had no major traumas
during l & d, were the victims of overzealous nurses. These are usually the
staff who don't know as much about breastfeeding but they know not to give
bottles. So, in the interest of feeding the baby at least every 3 hrs, they
try to shove babies onto the breast! (Parents may do this too, but I don't
see that as much). The babies either aren't ready or are having problems
achieving latch and so get frustrated and won't even try. They just scream.
I call it having to fix the created problem (breast aversion) before we can
fix the original problem (the latch, if there even was a problem)! I have
done education with individual nurses about not getting bent out of shape if
a baby sleeps a lot during the first day or so, and I'm not seeing so many
of those babies right now. It is a painful thing to see a baby screaming at
the place that should be giving him comfort and how upsetting this is to
families-Dads as well as moms. I know there are probably other causes of
this, but many times, I can't find one. So I assume the poor babe is just
objecting to not being "listened to" after nothing else worked!
