Debbie says:
"Those who breasfed before the boppy -- unite!"

I rarely suggest a boppy or similar pillow to a new mom. Often,
however, moms come to the hospital with them either because they got
them as a shower gift or they have used them with a previous baby.
When I see one, I do like to discuss their use. Frequently a newly
delivered mom has a problem because her belly still looks 4-6 months
pregnant. The boppy winds up on top of her belly and baby is
positioned way to high to latch effectively. Or, the boppy is in
front of her belly and baby basically falls into the space between
the pillow and her baby. I mention that she may find it works
better once her tummy is flatter. I also emphasize that the pillow
is to support mom's arm as her arm supports the baby.

I do like them early on for football (clutch or whatever) hold. If
she places the pillow so that the ends of the "C" shape are in front
and behind her, then it allows her to place baby far enough back to
get a good latch. Otherwise, baby tends to wind up too far in front
of mom. I try to describe/help mom with the idea of pillows behind
her back to allow baby's feet to go further back, but they don't
always get it or follow through.

There are times when I will recommend one. When a mom is reaching
maximum frustration with trying to keep pillows where she puts them
instead of each pillow going off in a different direction, I have
found the single, stay where you put it, pillow helpful. Also, with
some challenges such as a recent mom with an abnormally short arm,
it can be very helpful. It's not unlike the nipple shield., We
certainly don't use it as a cure-all, but there can be situations
where it can be very helpful.

Winnie
