After reading the various posts so far on this topic, I have mixed
feelings. First we definitely want to plant the seeds early that
breasts are first and foremost there to nourish our babies and other
functions, while certainly nice, are secondary. I do have one
hesitation about including it in general sex education ulness that
sex-ed is part of a larger growth and development course. If the
class is limited to what the penis, uterus and vagina are for and
how they function, then adding breasts to it may backfire. There is
already too much of a view that breasts are first and foremost
sexual organs with their primary function a "nice extra" which,
because they are sexual organs, must, if you choose to do it, be
done out of public view! Would including breasts in such a limited
sex-ed class serve more to reinforce negative views than to develop
a positive view of breastfeeding? On the other hand, if it is part
of a larger emphasis of understanding the changes that are occuring
as the child matures, then breasts and breastfeeding must be a part
of it.

Just thinking out loud.

Winnie
