I don't want to sound like I'm any expert on this, but our local LC
networking group had a guest speaker on this very topic today. Her name
is Sharon Groh-Wargo PhD, RD, LD from MetroHealth Medical Center in
Cleveland Ohio and she is the neonatal nutritionist for their Level III
NICU. She has also written a book on infant nutrition. She says she is
most concerned about those preemies of less than 34 weeks gestation,
particularly 600-1500 gm. She says she knows there is a lot of
discussion about the use of HMF, but she thinks it is necessary for those
early little ones. She says she thinks that human milk has evolved over
the centuries for human babies, but technology has evolved even faster.
Babies are being kept alive at earlier and earlier gestation and she
doesn't think human milk has evolved enough to take care of all these
babies' needs. She is concerned that the amount of protein, the
concentration of calcium and phosphorus, and the sodium level in human
milk isn't right for these babies and HMF (even though it is cow's milk
based) is the only thing we have right now to be able to manipulate those
levels. It also gets them gaining. So I guess there is no easy answer for
your friend knowing her husband's health history.
