Good afternoon. In our lactation specialist group today, one of our LC's
said she overheard a new OB/GYN tell a mother to not use lanolin on her
nipples as the product contains arsenic. The OB/GYN went on to recommend
using chapstick instead.

Now, when I see this OB I will first clarify that she's talking about
purefied lanolin and not other nipple care products (which could be the
case). If she's talking about purefied lanolin, I will then ask her for her
evidence to support the recommendation of not using purefied lanolin
and using chapstick instead because, as you know, "we really want to do
what's best for our patients and if she's right we need to change our
practices".

Until then, does anyone have any idea where this comes from? I searched the
archives and have found nothing about arsenic in purified lanolin products.

Thanks in advance!

Wanda Mertick, RN, MN, IBCLC
