Someone mentioned that new moms should be taught hand expression techniques in the hospital--I agree!  I have used hand expression myself with good sucess (although there have been times when I've used a pump as well) and I get frustrated that many moms seem to not even consider the suggestion to learn hand expression techniques.  I think it is a cultural thing--we want those gadgets.
