I am a Licensed Midwife and IBCLC and just returned from Haiti. I led the
first team of women's healthcare providers with Circle of Health
International (www.cohintl.org), we were a team of midwives/lactation
consultants, nurses and now a pediatrician and epidemiologist (who is doing
a Rapid Health Assessment of the internally displaced peoples). COHI's
mission is to provide capacity building of women's healthcare professionals
in crisis settings. We are set up at a pre-existing general and maternity
clinic in Fond Parisien, Haiti, near the Dominican Republic. Many patients
are coming from Port-au-Prince who are internally displaced peoples. The
team providing patient care alongside Haitian nurses and doctors have seen
many prenatal and postpartum women and have supported several postpartum
mothers who had discontinued breastfeeding "due to stress and malnutrition".

I just wanted to let you know that there are IBCLCs as well as other
maternity providers working on the ground in Haiti with mother/baby dyads to
preserve the breastfeeding relationship and to help with relactation.

Best,
Sharon
