Well, every rain cloud has a silver lining, and if the weather had been
better in New Orleans on Saturday we wouldn't have read Barbara's post on
this topic so I for one am glad she had an excuse for staying inside. It is
SO important to acknowledge the very real and very painful problems that can
arise in the learning phase of BF, and to push for the existence of good
support to women in that critical first couple of weeks. When you work with
mothers who desperately want to BF and who persist despite pain and low
supply and challenging babies and all the things we know make bottles look
very tempting to overwhelmed new parents, you realize how very little it
often takes to get them through it. When you see how disproportionately
grateful they are for the help they get, it is humbling. It is also what
gives me the motivation to continue, and the energy to stick with it for the
longer haul in those cases where more extensive help is needed.
