Hello friends,

Memorial Day weekend is over. I did four home visits this weekend, and
I am so frustrated. Sometimes I can identify the cause of the problem
but can't help the mother to resolve it. Sometimes I can't identify
the cause of the problem at all.
I saw 1) a baby who is content to suck on a finger or fingerfeed and
the suck feels OK but who only cries or falls asleep at the breast, 2)
a baby who is not interested in sucking even on a finger, 3) a baby
who gave a good appearance of sucking rhythmically and swallowing at
the breast but who was doing neither (the baby opened his mouth very
wide in an exaggerated up and down motion, no lower lip seal, lost
contact with my finger and the breast--we tried supporting the chin and
lip with mild success) 4) a baby who nursed well for 5 days and then
won't latch on. I wrote in detail about the last one yesterday and
asked for suggestions (but I imagine many of you didn't see it because
you were away).
I know this a rambling message. Like I said, I'm very frustrated. I
feel so bad when struggling parents are depending on me for answers and
I have so many questions.

Frustrated in New York,

Bev Solow
