One way to decide what is causing "white tongue" would be a wet mount.  As
a NP student I did a Planned Parenthood rotation where this is done all the
time.  A tongue blade can be used to scrape a small amount of the white
exudate onto a microscopic slide & then KOH (potassium hydroxide) can be
added to help visualize the hyphae and buds of yeast.  A local STD clinic
or public health lab would probably have the microscope and could walk you
through this--they are usually very nice.  I got a microscope and have been
meaning to do this on babies (easier than moms) but want to work with
someone more knowledgeable as I am a bit rusty. I did try it on myself when
my tongue was looking white & it looked like yeast to me.
