There are a lot of pseudo-experts out there. One of the ultrasonographers in
our area (not in our hospital) told a couple of moms who were pregnant with
twins that they couldn't possibly breastfeed and might as well just give up
that idea immediately. One of them, a friend of my daughter, who had nursed
her first child for two years, called me in some distress to ask if that were
true. I assured her that, while it takes planning, effort, organization, and
as much help as can be rounded up in the early weeks, it's certainly
possible. At the twins' two week peds exam, her daughter had gained a pound
and her son had gained two pounds, entirely on breast milk. This despite the
fact that mom apparently had La Crosse encephalitis shortly after delivery.
(This mom has been asked over and over, by well-meaning strangers, if the
twins are identical. Finally, in exasperation, she repiled to one of them,
"No. The little boy has a penis." <G>)
