I've searched the archives and found just a few ideas, but thought I'd
see if there is anyu other input. Got a call from a mom who has been
wroking hard at getting baby to nurse well and had finally gotten to the
"reward period". Now she has developed a case of hives. Went to a
dermatologist who told her it was because of the hormones of nursing and
she should wean the baby before he tries any other treatments!!! My
first reaction was Dr Jack's phrase "sacrificing breastfeeding on the
altar of ignorance". She definitely doesn't want to wean, but can't
stand the hives. In exploring further with her, she stated that it
develops each night shortly after she goes to bed, is the worst first
thing in the AM and then gets better through the day. The hives are
over her whole body. I suggested she stop using her fabric softener and
give her sheets an extra rinse cycle in her washing machine. Sure
sounds like something about her bed is causing it.
A couple of the archived messages mentioned a mom with hives that did go
away when she weaned, but I didn't find anything that explained it. I
also jotted down the various suggestions re treatment which I will pass
on (Rescue Remedy, Antihistamines, Prednisone, Claritin or Zyrtec)
Does anyone have any other suggestions. Is this dermatologist as far
off base as I suspect or is there some wierd relation between hormones
and hives that might only occur when lactating?
Winnie
